Big-D Midwest lends a helping hand with HEARTS & HAMMERS

Big-D Midwest is always thinking of ways to better their community in BIG ways and in small. Each year they partner with a local non-profit, Hearts &amp; Hammers, to volunteer for their annual Day of Service. With the office and field team in attendance, they paint, landscape, repair siding, clean out garages and even repair wheelchair ramps.
Hearts &amp; Hammers puts Big-D Midwest in touch with owners who need their assistance to restore their homes. Sharon was a previous homeowner and said, “I am just so thankful for the work that Big-D Construction did on my house. It took such a weight off my shoulders.”
Employee Jesse Sherman has been spearheading this collaboration for the last few years. He says, “It feels so good to give back to our community and have the opportunity to put my skills to use.”

HopeKids provides ongoing events, activities and a powerful, unique support community for families who have a child with cancer or some other life-­threatening medical condition. They surround these remarkable children and their families with the message that hope is a powerful medicine.

One, two, three, jump! And jump they do into the frosty depths of an ice-cold lake, all for a good cause. Big-D Midwest annually raises money for Special Olympics at the Polar Plunge event.
Special Olympics Minnesota is helping to create a world that accepts and welcomes every single person regardless of ability or disability. The Polar Plunge is the biggest fundraiser for Special Olympics Minnesota. All funds raised by Plungers help Special Olympics Minnesota provide year-round training and services to thousands of athletes with intellectual disabilities across the state.
“I have done the plunge in the past and love the opportunity to do something out of the box that supports a great cause,” said Jesse. “I was nervous about the colder than expected weather, but afterwards I felt invigorated. It was totally worth the ice-cold experience. Happy to have done it with the Big-D team and I would do it again!”

Each year Big-D Midwest, along with many of our subcontractors, supports Toys for Tots &#8211; Twin Cities by collecting toys to be distributed to children within our community in need of holiday cheer. We are so grateful to the companies and employees who donate to the drive!

March 8th is International Women’s Day!

Big-D Companies would like to give a BIG thank you to all of our incredible women associates that work within our family of companies.

Big-D Companies strives to be engaged within communities. Part of who we are and how we do business is giving back and today we had the opportunity to present a check with @agcutah to the Utah Food Bank.

Our COO at Big-D Companies, Troy Thompson, recently served as a Chairman on the AGC of Utah Board. He wanted the AGC to consider donating to the @utahfoodbank organization.
Today the Utah Foodbank was presented a spectacular donation. The check was written for nearly $36,000, which will provide about 161,000 meals.
We are grateful for the opportunity that we have to interact and donate to great causes within our communities.

A truck full of over 200 toys for teens and youngsters was collected for Southern Anoka Community Assistance (SACA), a non-profit nearby our Big-D Construction Midwest office in St. Paul Minnesota.

These toy donations will help families through five Twin Cities communities celebrate the holiday season.

Under new ownership, the company will continue to be locally managed and operate under the same name. Big-D Companies Joins Forces with Colorado Based CFC Construction

A day of giving to benefit the 2022 Special Olympics turned into much more after Big-D Midwest purchased sub sandwiches for their team and discovered the cause unwrapped a few personal connections. ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​
“My son Luke is 30 years old. He has a cognitive impairment; he was born six weeks early, and his lungs weren’t developed, which caused oxygen deprivation in his brain. He started doing the special Olympics when he was 11-years-old. He excels at sports, and he loves doing it!” said Sr. Superintendent Patrick Rodgers for Big-D Midwest.
Each year participating Jersey Mike’s Subs donates 100% of their daily profits to benefit the Special Olympics USA Games and Special Olympics state Programs. Nationwide, a full day of sales brings in an estimated $10 million – to charity. This year, Big-D Midwest jumped in on the national fundraiser and sent a companywide email treating associates to lunch.
“It touched me that Big-D would offer all of us sandwiches for this event Jersey Mike’s puts on and I just want to say thank you from me and my son because it helps him continue going on,” said Rodgers who has been with Big-D Midwest for four years. Throughout his 38-year construction career, Rodgers worked hard to care for and create a comfortable life for his son and the Special Olympics brought out a passion in Luke for floor hockey, baseball, and basketball.
“I was a single dad, so seeing him get physical was cool, and he loves sports. It’s very exciting to watch him play!” said Rodgers.
“If you ever have a chance to witness one of the events the Special Olympics has, I highly recommend doing so. Participants, like my son Luke, look forward to every event so they can play and socialize with others. They do not know the meaning of losing!” said Rodgers.
Jersey Mikes changes their charity each year, and Big-D Midwest continues to participate and support the event.

Supporting Those who Serve through Operation Gratitude

Big-D Midwest partnered with Operation Gratitude, an organization that honors and serves military and first responders through various volunteer and support opportunities across the United States, in honor of Veterans Day 2022.
The Midwest team joined together over their lunch break to craft paracord bracelets to be sent to active military personnel. These paracord ‘survival’ bracelets, “provide a military or first responder with a tangible, lasting expression of gratitude and a symbol of appreciation from grateful Americans everywhere” quotes Operation Gratitude’s website and will be sent alongside other essential items in care packages.
Big-D is thankful to all who serve.

OPERATION GRATITUDE

Make-A-Wish had a lasting impression on Lauryn Greenwald and her family not too long ago, and they&#8217;ve been paying it forward ever since.
Lauryn, a Sr. Project Administrator at Big-D Construction’s Midwest office said shortly after her son Christian had been diagnosed with cancer, the foundation granted him his wish in 2016; to meet popular YouTubers “Rhett and Link.” As Lauryn puts it, the entire experience was “just awesome.”
Not only did Christian get to meet a couple of his favorite online stars, but he and his family were treated in true Hollywood fashion with a flight to Los Angeles, and limo service from the airport to their Southern California hotel. Lauryn describes it as a “cushy stay in a super fancy resort.”  The VIP treatment didn’t stop there, the family then received special passes allowing them to jump the lines on all the rides at Universal Studios like real stars! “It was just amazing,” Lauryn recalls. “It was like the best thing and my kids still talk about it today.”​​​​​​​
For Christian, the day became a cherished memory for the rest of his life until he passed away in 2018. To pay it forward, and help other children have a similar experience, Lauryn’s family became involved with the Minnesota Chapter’s Walk for Wishes event.
The fundraiser, which gives participants the choice of either a 5K run or a mile-long walk, raises money for Make-A-Wish. In Christian’s honor, the family has named their fundraising team “Christian Cancer Swag,” the name Christian chose when he was the grandmaster of the event in 2017. This last month, the Christian Cancer Swag team did quite well, coming in third place for money raised this year.
As a sign of support, Big-D Midwest matched the value Lauryn and her family raised. To Lauryn, the gesture alone was priceless.
“It’s above and beyond,” said Lauryn. “I’ve never worked for any company before that has ever cared about me and supported me in my personal life. I think that’s probably pretty rare.”
Big-D Midwest continues to support Lauryn and Make A Wish each year, and is very happy to do so.

Big-D Midwest, located in St. Paul, Minnesota recently finished construction on Como Park Animal Hospital in Roseville, MN.

Sitting at 22,500 square feet, the three-story animal hospital features a full basement with cat boarding rooms, expansive space for dog kennels, a K9 quiet room, a grooming area, laundry, and storage. The main floor is typical for a full-service animal hospital including exam and consultation rooms, minor and emergency treatment rooms, surgery room, separate dog and cat recovery areas, a dental treatment room, ICU, radiology, a waiting area, reception, offices, and more!

Congratulations to our Safety Team for being named the 2021 Diamond Award Winner, an achievement of safety excellence!

The award was presented by the Associated General Contractors of Utah at their Annual Awards breakfast, in which our COO Troy Thompson and AGC Chairman of the Board participated in.
The Diamond Award with five stars is the highest safety award you can get from the AGC. Hats off to our BIG-D Safety Team for always putting safety at the front of the line!

Recently Big-D Construction and partners took part in a ceremonial wall-breaking for the historic Frank E. Moss Courthouse in the heart of downtown Salt Lake City. 

The two-year project was awarded to Big-D&#8217;s Salt Lake group by the General Services Administration.
We are honored and excited to be a part of a renovation that is so meaningful to the community and help preserve this historic gem.
Dozens gathered for the celebration including GSA, HOK Design, Preservation Utah, members of the U.S Bankruptcy Court for the District of Utah, and Big-D Construction.
The project is slated to be complete in the Spring of 2024!

Beginning her career at Johnson Carlier in August of 2020, Shivers was hired as the Director of Business Strategy, a position she’s done exceptionally well in during difficult times. In her role as Vice President, Shivers is responsible for the preconstruction, business development, marketing, and administrative teams. Additionally, she will spend a majority of her time securing new business, accelerating growth and ensuring 100% client satisfaction.
“I’m excited to represent Johnson Carlier and the Big-D Family in a leadership role. The opportunity to help grow the organization into the next century and execute on our strategic plan is a challenge I am ready for,” said Shivers.
The new leadership role comes on the heels of several promotions within Big-D Family of Companies as of the new year. Shivers will report to Big-D’s Chief Operational Officer, Troy Thompson, based at company headquarters in Salt Lake City, Utah.
“Laura’s drive, passion and skills when it comes to enterprising and social relationships are as high as I have seen in other leaders within the organization,” said Thompson. “I am thrilled to see how she uses those powerful skills to help all of our associates at Johnson Carlier achieve the careers of their dreams.”
Prior to Big-D, Shivers has an extensive and impressive resume as an award-winning marketing and communications professional. She is also highly dedicated and fervent about giving back to the community and has turned that passion into one of the fastest growing non-profits in the state of Arizona, Back 2 School Bounty. Shivers is highly determined and good at what she does. As Vice President, she is looking forward to winning, growing people, and evolving the perception of the company’s limitations. She’s particularly proud of how far Johnson Carlier has come and is looking forward to the future.

Big-D Companies Announces Two New Executive Roles

SALT LAKE CITY, UT — As Big-D Family of Companies continues to grow nationwide with 14 offices in eight states and over 1,500 associates, the company&#8217;s executive leadership is also expanding.
Big-D announces Michael Sant, former Senior Vice President, has been named Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) and Shaun Orr, former Vice President, has been named Chief Information Officer (CIO).
Since 2005, Sant has been a leader at Big-D Companies in many different roles. Sant&#8217;s resume includes Senior Estimator, Pre-Construction Director, Vice President, Senior Vice President, and most recently an executive on one of the largest ongoing projects in the United States, The Salt Lake City International Airport Redevelopment Program.
“We are pleased to watch his progression as a leader, and we are excited to have him take the reigns as CSO,” said Big-D Chief Executive Officer Cory Moore.
As Chief Strategy Officer, Sant will have many new responsibilities including consistently clarifying and communicating Big-D Companies&#8217; vision and taking the necessary strategic steps to support that vision and continued growth.
“This is an exciting opportunity, and I look forward to contributing to the lasting vision created by our founder, Dee Livingood,” Sant said.
Former Vice President and Head of Human Resources and Information Technology, Orr has worked for Big-D Family of Companies and its associates for over 20 years.
“His dedication exemplifies our mission of being the most sought-after, which is echoed through his ever-patient, thoughtful, and humble service to everyone at Big-D,” Moore said.
As CIO, Orr is responsible for the effective leadership, strategy, and implementation of the organization&#8217;s information and policies as related to Human Resources and Technology. Additionally, he will provide expertise and future vision to leverage technology and human capital management to ensure Big-D Companies&#8217; commitment to growth and innovation.
“I am honored to have been asked to work with the Senior Leadership team at Big-D and lead our efforts on innovation, technology, and our most valuable and cherished resource: our people,&#8221; Orr said. &#8220;I have been fortunate to have been given amazing opportunities at Big-D Companies over the last two decades and will continue to foster our culture and support our mission to be the most sought-after construction company in the business.&#8221;
With Big-D Family of Companies&#8217; growth, continuing to provide opportunity through expansion is key to the company&#8217;s future and retaining personnel.
“It is essential that we reinforce our strategic plan with corporate leaders such as Michael Sant and Shaun Orr, who had proven themselves as impressive and critical leaders in their past positions, and will ensure we grow intelligently, productively, and with the appropriate risk management processes and systems in place,” Moore said.

Big-D Executives, Michael Sant and Shaun Orr were recently featured by ACP’s Rocky Mountain Construction for their new leadership roles within Big-D Family of Companies.

Recently Big-D Chief Operations Officer, Troy Thompson, was named 2022 AGC of Utah Chairman of the Board.

He was formally introduced at this year’s AGC Annual Convention where they celebrated 100 years. He was also featured in the AGC of Utah’s Annual Magazine.
